Substance Abuse Treatment

The overuse of alcohol and other drugs currently represents one of the most serious and prevalent health problems in our communities. Furthermore, people who have alcohol or other drug problems have higher rates of Depression, Anxiety, and Personality disorders, than people in the general population. As such, a person with a substance misuse disorder faces a wide spectrum of challenges; ranging from relationship disruption to brain damage, imprisonment, and, potentially, death. Here at Frisco Mental Health Services, we can help.

Outpatient Alcohol Addiction Treatment

Alcohol addiction is when you can’t control how much you drink and have trouble with your feelings and actions when you’re not drinking. Being addicted to alcohol is actually considered a brain disease. Alcohol creates real changes in your brain that make it hard to quit. Trying to diminish your drinking, or quit altogether, can be very challenging on your own. Contact Frisco Mental Health Services to see how we can help you along in your journey.

Did you know?

Excessive alcohol consumption is the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States. More than 85,000 deaths a year in the United States are directly attributed to alcohol use, including resulting medical illness, traffic fatalities, drowning, and suicide. Nearly 10,500 traffic fatalities in the United States in 2015 were related to alcohol use, 28 percent of all traffic fatalities.

Alcohol use disorder is believed to stem from the interplay of genetics, environmental influences, and specific personality traits. It has been estimated that genetic factors are responsible for approximately 50 percent of the vulnerabilities related to the disorder.

At Frisco Mental Health, we suggest that patients with moderate to severe alcohol use disorder initially be offered a choice of medication or an evidence-based psychosocial intervention, or both.

Opioid Addiction and Dependence

“Opioids” is an umbrella word for natural and synthetic painkillers derived from the poppy plant. Physicians often relieve acute pain—from injuries, surgeries, toothaches or other medical and dental procedures—or to alleviate chronic pain with opioids. However, studies show that long-term use of opioids for chronic pain is ineffective—and comes with the risk of addiction. Opioid dependence causes withdrawal symptoms, which makes it difficult to stop taking them. Contact Frisco Mental Health Services to see how we can help you along in your journey to rid your opioid addiction.

Did you know?

Opioids are a group of drugs that include heroin, morphine, and other prescription pain medicines such as oxycodone. (Oxycodone is sold under the brand names OxyContin and Percocet.) These drugs are also grouped under other terms, such as “opiates” and “narcotics.”

In the United States, 5.1 million people (1.9 percent of persons age 12 or older) were estimated in 2015 to have used heroin at some point in their lives; 329,000 (0.1 percent) reported use in the last month. Heroin use in the United States has increased since 2000 (eg, the number of past-year users increased from 373,000 to 828,000 between 2007 and 2015). There also has been an increase in heroin-related overdose deaths with nearly 13,000 reported in 2015.

Illicitly purchased heroin can vary in purity, leading to the user’s lack of knowledge of the dose administered and increasing the risk of morbidity and mortality.

Prescription opioid analgesics are the most commonly abused opioids in the United States. Prescription opioids are the leading cause of opioid-related overdose in the United States.

Patients with opioid use disorder who achieve abstinence through medically supervised withdrawal or other means often require long-term treatment to prevent relapse. Treatment options include long-term medication maintenance with an opioid agonist or an opioid antagonist, or abstinence-based therapy, a nonmedication psychosocial treatment.

The treatment of opioid addiction and dependence involves 3 key pieces: medicines including Suboxone, an evidence-based psychosocial intervention and support groups.

Suboxone Treatment

Normal protocol for treatment of opiate addiction is using buprenorphine—better known by its brand name, Suboxone. Contact Frisco Mental Health Services to see how we can help you along with your Suboxone treatment journey.
